It’s a stressful experience to have your smartphone refuse to turn on, especially if you’re expecting an important phone call or need the GPS function to get to an urgent meeting. In any case, if your phone just won’t turn on, here are a few things you can do on the spot.
Charge the Battery
If you haven’t recently damaged your phone or tablet, and it refused to turn on, then sometimes the right answer is the most obvious one. When was the last time you charged it? If you can’t remember, then try plugging it into your wall adapter. Whether it’s dead or just turned off, you’ll get some sort of notification if it begins to charge. If you keep it plugged in for several minutes and nothing happens, then you might have a bigger issue on your hands.
Remove the Battery
Unfortunately, this is only possible with certain devices. If your phone has a removable back cover that allows you to take out the battery, then do so, as this will immediately shut down the operating system. Leave the battery out for a few seconds before putting it back into the phone. This should either cause the phone to restart immediately or you’ll need to press the power button to see if it starts up.
Restore to Factory Settings (Android)
Sometimes removing and replacing your phone’s battery will cause the device to freeze after it’s already begun to reset. If this happens, press and hold the power button for at least ten seconds to turn off your phone. Then, depending on the type of phone you have, look up which buttons you’ll need to press to perform a factory reset. Once you’re there, you should be able to reset your phone’s settings and start from scratch with a functioning device.
Force Reboot (iPhone)
Using a similar method a previous talked about, you’re going to reboot your iPhone in hopes that the device will turn on once again. As there’s no battery to remove with Apple devices, simply press and hold the power and home button for 10 to 15 seconds before releasing them. After a few minutes, try turning on your phone using the power button.
Unfortunately, if none of these methods work, then you’ll have to turn to the professionals to get your phone up and running again. Whether you call the specific number for your phone brand, walk into a retail store or visit a third-party repair shop, it’s up to you and how much you want to spend.
